Your product page is only as smart as the data behind it. Metafields and metaobjects let you model that data once, edit it in one place, and reuse it across every page, filter and search result.
Most stores cram specs, size charts and FAQs into the description box. It works until you have 200 products and a size guide to change. Structured data fixes that, and it is one of the cheapest upgrades on Shopify.
A metafield is one custom value attached to one resource: a product, variant, collection or customer. A metaobject is a standalone record with its own fields that many resources can point to. Ask one question: how many places change when this data changes? More than one means a metaobject.
The winning pattern: a product metafield that references a metaobject. One size guide entry, 80 products, one edit.
1. Repeating shared content as per-product metafields. 2. Using metaobjects for truly unique data. 3. Storing structured data as JSON, which editors can't manage in admin. 4. Mixing namespace conventions. 5. Forgetting Storefront API access on headless builds, where metafields are private by default.
Limits are rarely the constraint. Since October 2025, Shopify allows up to 256 metafield definitions per resource type and up to 1,000,000 entries per metaobject definition. Plan the model, not the ceiling.
The best product pages start in the data model, not the theme. At Glyde we map your catalogue into typed fields and reusable records, then build templates that scale with every new SKU.
