Shopify Search & Discovery vs third-party search apps

Shoppers who use your search bar are your highest-intent visitors, and the ones most likely to hit a dead end. Here is when Shopify's free Search & Discovery app is enough, and when a paid search app earns its monthly fee.

Most stores never test their search. They install the default, glance at the box and move on. That is expensive, because search users behave differently from browsers: they know what they want and they are ready to buy it.

Where Search & Discovery holds up

Shopify's own app has quietly become capable. It indexes titles, tags, vendors, SKUs and barcodes, handles typos and stemming, and now offers semantic matching on Grow, Advanced and Plus plans for catalogues under 200,000 products. You can boost a product for up to 10 search terms, set up 1,000 synonyms per store, and build up to 25 filters from options, metafields and metaobjects.

For a tight catalogue, that is plenty. One merchant found the query "belt bag" returned nothing 41 times in a month; a single synonym fixed it.

Where it stops

The limits that push stores to upgrade

The ceilings show up at scale. Collections above 5,000 products show no filters, results above 100,000 products drop them, and re-indexing can take 24 to 48 hours. Synonyms must be entered by hand with no CSV import, and reporting is thin: competing vendors point out the app lacks full no-results query tracking, which is exactly the report you need to fix search. Operators such as quotes also switch off typo tolerance and boosts.

Rule of thumb: if you cannot see what shoppers search for and fail to find, you cannot improve search. Fix the visibility first, then decide whether to pay.
